What Makes Mentoring Different

Coaching and mentoring are related but distinct. A coach helps you find your own answers through structured conversation. A mentor shares their own experience, offers perspective, and guides you toward solutions they have navigated themselves.

Both have a place. Many clients find that a blended approach, drawing on coaching when they need to think something through, and mentoring when they need the benefit of lived experience, is the most valuable combination.

Peter offers both, and is clear in any engagement about which is serving the client at any given moment.

"I have sat in every seat my clients are sitting in. I know what it feels like to lead a team through uncertainty, to stall at a level below where you expected to be, and to have to reinvent yourself professionally. That experience is not something I read about. It is something I lived."

The Areas Peter Mentors In

Career Navigation

Making the right moves at the right time, whether that is a promotion bid, a sector change, or a decision to leave a comfortable role for something better.

Organisational Politics

Understanding the dynamics of large organisations, building influence without authority, and navigating the reality of how decisions actually get made.

Leadership Transitions

Moving from individual contributor to manager, from manager to director, from director to executive, each transition has specific challenges that experience helps navigate.

Building a Team

Recruiting, developing, and holding a high-performing team, the practical reality of what works and what does not, from someone who has done it across multiple sectors.

Stakeholder Management

Managing up, across, and down in complex organisations. Building relationships that advance both your goals and the organisation's.

Resilience and Recovery

Getting through difficult periods, redundancy, setback, burnout, or loss of direction, with perspective from someone who has navigated all of them.

Mentoring FAQs

Many clients benefit from both. If you have a specific challenge and want structured thinking support, coaching is usually the right starting point. If you want guidance from lived experience, mentoring adds an additional layer. Peter often blends both within a single engagement.

Not necessarily. The dynamics of senior leadership, managing stakeholders, making decisions under pressure, building teams, navigating politics, are remarkably consistent across sectors. Peter's breadth of sector experience is often more valuable than deep expertise in a single industry.

Typically monthly, though some clients prefer fortnightly especially during intensive periods. The structure is agreed in the initial conversation and can flex to meet your needs.
